DEFINITION: A landslide is defined as the movement of a mass of rock, debris, or earth down a slope.

HISTORY: Some slopes in Del Norte County are susceptible to landslides, including along major transportation and supply routes of Highways 199 and 101. The three-mile-long segment of Highway 101 called Last Chance Grade is known for its instability. Slides in this area have been ongoing for decades. In Del Norte County, most landslides occur during the winter months when the water table is high and the soil is saturated. Landslides can also occur as secondary hazards to wildfires, floods, and earthquakes,
